Sport Alliance Ontario (SAO) is pleased to announce that 90 of the 256 athletes and 18 of the 55 coaches representing Canada at the 2014 Commonwealth Games now taking place in Glasgow, Scotland are from Ontario. Of the 90 athletes from Ontario, 24 have participated in the Ontario Games and 22 have been a member of Team Ontario at the Canada Games.

  •  90 of 256 athletes (35%) on Team Canada are from Ontario
  • 40 athletes (15%) on Team Canada competed at Ontario Games or for Team Ontario
  • The 24 Ontario Games Alumni will compete in 12 of the 17 sport
  • The 22 Team Ontario Alumni will compete in 9 of 17 sports

The Province of Ontario is sending the most athletes of any province or territory in Canada with over a third of the team coming from Ontario. This year Canada has sent its largest team ever to a Commonwealth Games held outside the country this year. The 2014 games mark Canada’s 20th appearance at the Commonwealth Games.

The numbers demonstrate the success of Ontario athletes and the value of the Ontario Games and Team Ontario in our athletes’ development. There are 6 athletes that competed in both the Ontario Games and for Team Ontario at the Canada Games (Crystal Emmanuel, Emily Batty, Josh Cassidy, Monika Burgess, Samantha Cornett and Sultana Frizell) Team Canada at the Commonwealth Games is made up of 256 athletes competing in 16 of the 17 sports. Canada is sending the fourth largest contingent of athletes out of 71 nations and territories behind Australia, England and host Scotland. The Commonwealth Games will help prepare many of these athletes for the 2016 Olympic Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.

In addition to the athletes, many of Team Canada’s coaches and other staff have gained valuable experience from their participation at past Ontario Games. We would like to wish all the Canadian athletes and coaches the best of luck at the XX Commonwealth Games.
